Yunus Emre: From Heartbreak to Enlightenment

Yunus Emre, a simple villager, loses his wife and is, therefore, heartbroken beyond all measure. This is a reminder to him that makes him contemplate on ancestral virtues where life is impermanent and any worldly attachments are ill driven. Therefore, he rejects the previous way of life and sets out in search of spiritual salvation. Full of despair, inspired by the loss of his beloved one and the desire to find something more in life, Yunus sets his journey toward the unknown as the turing point in search for the divine and the purpose of life. 

 Yunus is introduced to the secular world to go in search of his wealth whereby he meets several characters that influence his spiritual life. He comes across a Sufi master who makes him acquaintances with Sufism- divine teachings center on purity of heart and love of the divine. Yunus begins to understand meaningless of material belongings and realization of spirituality and the search for soul. These are the first experiences that include admiration but also a certain level of perplexity while the protagonist seems to be struggling to find the common ground between the old and the new. 

 Yunus also goes on with his spiritual pilgrimage undergoing various obstacles that challenge him. Thus, reading Mahayana, he gains knowledge about the true state of being and the process of ego eradication. He leads him through the trials of the cultivation of the moral virtue of the application of rigor and of the performing of the spiritual exercises. Yunus starts gradually opening his eyes towards that light and starts realizing God’s will in every affair of life. These experiences strengthen Him in the Sufi way but he continues to have some uncertainties and fears. 

 The episode illustrates the fact of Yunus’s increasing power as he rises to become a leader who gathers people around him. Many people like the messages that he preached about love, non- discrimination and unity hence being both appreciated and criticized. Yunus also has enemies, in the sense that they either are driven by jealousy, do not comprehend the divine message he received, or simply reject it. He does not give up this task and subdues all the disputes and misconceptions with his intelligence and benevolence. Its plot transforms into a light that shines for those, who are searching for spiritual transformation.
